Dancers from Dance Unlimited Repertory Company (DURC) traveled to Virginia Beach, VA, recently to attend StarQuest’s National Dance Competition. Over 40 dance studios from across the country competed, in all styles of dance, at regional competitions to qualify for the event, which included more than 1,200 dances over a full week of performances. DURC’s contemporary piece, “Roll with It,” scored 1st out of 31 senior large group dances and DURC’s character piece, “King of New York,” scored 2nd out of 16 petite large group dances.
Other top-scoring performances include: a ballet number, “Two if by Bach” (senior small group, 5th out of 45 dances) and a modern duet performed by Andrew Metzgar and Michelle Brandenburg, “Is That Alright?” (senior duet / trio, 5th out of 50 dances). Based on their scores, these four dances participated in the “Quest for the Best”, StarQuest’s World Finals competition on the last day of the event. Visit www.starquestdance.com to view a YouTube video clip montage of dances in the finals.
Andrew Metzgar, a graduating senior who will be attending Marymount Manhattan College to pursue dance, won the title of Mr. StarQuest. Mr. Metzgar received a cash prize, trophy and scholarships. There were two top 20 solo performances by DURC dancers: “Saturday Night”, Isabella Tilmont (11th out of 58 petite solos) and “Neverland” Michelle Brandenburg (12th out of 140 senior solos). Ms. Brandenburg is a graduating senior who is also pursuing dance; she will attend UMBC on a full scholarship.
Dance Unlimited Repertory Company was recognized for their achievement in costuming. A character number, “Carnivale”, won 1st place for Outstanding Costume out of 220 teen and senior group dances, and “King of New York” earned 3rd place for Outstanding Costume out of 153 petite and junior group dances.
The DURC choreographers were also recognized by the StarQuest judges for their talent. Eight studios qualified for Outstanding Choreography. Donna B. Grim, Melissa Boerum, and Gayle Williams received Outstanding Choreography Awards for their amazing work on seven dances: “Livin’ Easy”, “Carnivale”, “School Daze”, “Unintended Journey”, “Roll With It”, “Two if by Bach”, and “King of New York”. These dances were selected from more than 375 performances.
Under the artistic direction of Ms. Grim, Dance Unlimited Repertory Company is a pre-professional program for dancers ages 8-18 seeking accelerated training. In addition to participating at regional and national dance competitions, dancers perform at various community events including the Kris Kringle parade, In the Street, Winterfest, and Other Voices, Inc.’s annual production of Alice in Wonderland at the Weinberg Center. Dance Unlimited Repertory Company, at the Performing Arts Factory, is located at 244B S. Jefferson St., Frederick. Auditions are held in late September.
